I am scared of some strange things. Not the run and hide or scream kind of scared but more of the "I will not get near" "Do not get me near" "I do not think that is funny" "I refuse to participate" kind of scared.
Horses. They just freak me out. I have total respect for Horses in that I think they are beautiful and useful creatures. I like betting on them. I do not want to ride one or be anywhere near one. Their strength and power scare me. I have this vision in my head of getting on a horse, it bucking me off, and then stomping my face in the ground! No thanks.
Birds. I should say that only ones with sharp beaks that fly freak me out. LOL I know that sounds lame but ducks are cool. Here is the thing, a bird can fly up to you, peck out your eye, and then just fly away. It would be like nothing happened to the bird while I am scrambling around on the floor with only one good eye! If I get bit by a snake I can find it and kill it but a bird, it can just fly away and even poop on my if it wants too. Birds are scary.
Clowns. Clowns are just evil. They are scary. And this morning I saw an article on Yahoo's homepage that prompted this post. The picture on the home page is so flipping scary. 250 kids from 4-16 years in age were asked if they liked clowns. 250 said yes. HA! I am not alone!
Here is the thing, you never know what a clown is thinking. They can have a painted on smile while they are secretly plotting to kill you and everyone else at the party. I am not a fan.
Anyhow, I know this has nothing to do with Diabetes but I thought I would share my strangeness.
Do you fear any of this stuff? Are their any other things that you fear that others find funny or strange?

George, I am also deathly afraid of birds, for some unknown reason. The idea of being pecked to death is awful. I've never had an experience to warrant my fear, nor have I seen "Birds".
You are not alone!
George -
A duck hit my windshield once while I was on a freeway onramp once - the 57 I think. I don't know why you would give ducks a pass on your fear list. I could have been seriously hurt! :)
"They can have a painted on smile while they are secretly plotting to kill you and everyone else at the party."
This made me laugh so hard I had to explain to my office what was so funny. Of course, it all made sense when they found out it was you. :)
I do not like bears. Bears, as far as I am concerned, are not cuddly and cha-cha-cha like they are on Charmin commercials. They are terrifying and would eat my fingers if I didn't run away.
:: shivers ::
This could be my post.
I am afraid of horses. I have ridden one once at camp (when I was about 10 years old). Nothing bad happened, but it was then that I decided that I hate horses. I hate being that high off the ground, with the potential of them "biting" my leg, thinking it's a pesky fly.
A friend of mine has a big, colorful bird as a pet. It flies around the house. I refuse to come over if it's out. I have a vision of massage pecking of my face. Also once on a BWCA trip, I got pecked in the leg (I still have scars!) by a ruffed grouse. I ran into a ranger later in the trip and said "good grief, I was attacked by a cornish game hen!" He made a face and said, "um, you mean a ruffed grouse?!" Shows what I know. The only birds I like are the plucked, dead ones that sizzle up in the oven with gravy. :-)
OMG. I was dying while reading this.
I'm afraid of horses ever since I saw a lady getting bit by one on Funniest Home Videos. I never knew they bit until then!
Clowns ARE evil. John Wayne Gacy was a clown for children's parties. And I got yelled at by a clown who came to cheer up kids at the hospital while Brendon was there during his diagnosis. A clown was in the hallway greeting the kids while Brendon, me and a nurse were walking to Bren's room from the playroom on the floor. When the clown greeted Brendon, he hid behind me and I told the nurse Bren is afraid of clowns and that I didn't like them. The clown heard this and yelled "WAY TO PERPETUATE THE FEAR, MOM!" And I turned to the nurse and said "THAT is why I don't like clowns." I was so pissed.
The one thing I'm deathly afraid of are pit bulls. I've seen too many attacks on TV. I break out into a cold sweat if I'm near one which makes me even more terrified because dogs can smell fear.
Also, I'm afraid of gasoline getting on me while filling up my car. I'm afraid I'll spontaneously combust.
I am afraid of house cats, they are sly and very un-dog like.
I'm afraid of clowns (the commercial for tonight's Wife Swap has been sending eerie chills down my spine for a week) it bothers me that they look one way, yet act a different way. They are all Pennywise to me.
Porcelain dolls and marionettes and animatronics (like the stuff at Disney) make my skin crawl. Muppets and other regular puppets are ok, though.
David Blaine and Criss Angel freak me out! creeeepyyyy and not in a cool way.
Houses that have ivy growing on them, or excessive weeds. I will cross the street to avoid walking past them.
A few years back, my husband and I were watching a movie about some alien thing on sci-fi. During one of the commercials, I commented that the little girl in the movie was creeping me the hell out. Turns out it was Dakota Fanning. To this day, I can't watch a movie if she's in it.
When Agusus Gloop gets sucked up through the big tube in the original Willie Wonka.
Coulrophobia (fear of clowns)-
one of the top ten biggest fears. you are so not alone. I was discussing this very topic with my students this afternoon.
In case you wanted to see some other phobias: http://www.ojohaven.com/fun/phobias.html
I hate clowns, too. You just can't tell what they're thinking & that bothers me....
clowns ARE freaky... must be such a diminishing industry. I'm still bothered by the ones in Cirque du Soleil. You just cant take them seriously even if they are trying to be funny.
I think birds are creepy and I always feel like they're giving me the evil eye. Except for ducks. You're right, they are pretty nice. Huh. Weird.
And now I'm ruminating on the anthropological aspects of clown-fear, like, is it because we are biologically built to be able to read people's emotions and clowns make that impossible so they freak us out? I don't know, but I'm down with it if we just put a moratorium on the whole clown industry.
Thanks for sharing! Now you know you're far from alone in your funny fears. ;)
I think this was one of the best posts ever! I swear, I was laughing out loud for most of the post, and it just kept on getting better in the comments!
Dude - the thing with the birds cracked me up.
You forgot to mention that you don't like sand. Though I guess that doesn't fall into the "fears" category, more of a "dislike" category.
I'll never forget the picture of you, on the sidewalk next to the sand at the beach when Allison came to visit... that's a classic!
