Calling in the Troops

I posted about this on Blogabetes and TuDiabetes and I received some feedback..

BUT I NEED MORE!!!

I am calling on my faithful readers. This Saturday is the ADA walk Team Beat the Bete is doing and I really want to put one sentence statements on our shirts. Either advice for PWD's or misconceptions that people may have about diabetes. I just want to do even more as we walk.

So far this is all I have:

Insulin is not a cure.
There is no such thing as "good" diabetes.
Test. Don't guess.
Ninjabetic

That's it. Sorry Scott (and Zazzy), the one you suggested may be a touch too PG13 for the team! LOL

So far we have 10 people walking so I really need some help!

Thanks!

The video this week comes from TuDiabetes. It is a short but very powerful clip that I hope you show to everyone you know.

But, before you press play, you should know that a very VERY awesome kid I know took being Ninja to the next level. Check out the blog post at Danieldoo first and then (with Daniel in mind) watch the clip.

That should make the message even more clear.

My Saturday Afternoon

This Saturday my wife and daughter went over to Temple City (about a 20 minute drive) to check out a little town fair. We both graduated from TCHS so we thought it would be fun to check out the crafts, entertainment, and see if we would spot and avoid past school mates. :)
There were a lot of cool and not so cool things for sale.

I should have bought this "S" for SuperG but I thought the flowers were a little frilly for a ninjabetic.

Ahh and a performance by the "Brighter Side Singers" who rejected this Ninja as a freshman when I tried out. I showed them. I quit choir and became Drum Major. Go Band GO!

And this is a picture of yours truly checking out a booth with lots of cool mosaic pieces. Do you see what I see????????

Okay so Amylia, Shannon, and Kerri this is for you. If you did not see these comments then you must check them out. I was dared by these three to wear my pump in my sock WHILE wearing shorts.

The moral to the story?

Ninjas are suckers for dares.

Allison's Article

Earlier in the year, Allison Blass (Blass rhymes with gloss) wrote a great article about Diabetes Blogs in Diabetes Self Management magazine. If you have diabetes and do not have a subscription to this magazine, I would suggest you sign up. It is always filled with great articles, information, and recipes and I don’t know about you but I am always looking for the next yummy thing to eat.

The article is now on the Diabetes Self Management website so if you have not read it, please check it out!

She interviewed Penny and Rachel about their blogs and how blogging has affected their lives. I think a Ninja also slipped in there too. She also writes about how to start a blog so those lurkers out there who have thought about writing may want to take a stab at it.

If you have read it I still think you should check out the Diabetes Self Management site. There are lots of good things to check out just like the magazine!

Enjoy.

The Sock Stash

So I know I am totally stealing this from my Chai Tea Master but seriously, it is about the coolest thing I have tried in a while.

Wearing my pump in my sock.

If you have not checked out this sweet spot then I suggest you try it.

You may be saying, "George. Dood. Really? How does it reach?"

Well although I do have lengthy ninja stems my thigh site [slash] 43" tubing combo works quite nicely.

"So what makes the sock stash the newest latest coolest spot ever?"

Well, I went to buy some pants last week and I have never had an easier time in the dressing room. I did not have to worry about Master P getting tangled up or getting torn out when I am trying on any pants! It was as if my pump became a part of me.

You may be thinking, "I do not need to try on clothes as often as a Sliminja like yourself. What else makes it saweet?"

Well, the fact that I have freed up a pocket, rocks! You see, I do not like to wear stuff on my belt unless it is a grappling hook or a ninja star holder. I also never put my money clip in the same pocket as my pump so I won't scratch P's delicate display.

"Well what is the down side? There has to be a flip side to this awesomeness."

You are correct. I cannot use the sock stash when wearing shorts. I also feel a little strange when I am walking around in my office at work and people hear the "BEEP BOOP BEEP" from my foot! And bolusing while being hunched over as if I am tying my shoes is strange but I would still recommend it.

If you do try the sock stash please let me know. I would love to hear what you think about it.

Meeting Kerri

“SuperG, the plan is Starbucks at 8:30.”

I stare at my Blackberry reading Kerri’s text. I never go to Starbucks! I am like the only person in the world that does not know what the heck to order there. Oh well. I figure I will ask her what to get and then reply back.

“Sweet. See you there!”

When I finally got to the Starbucks I saw Kerri and Chris at the counter ordering. I waved, said “hi” to both of them and let the Ninja emerge.

“Okay, so I know nothing about the Starbucks. What should I order? I have no clue.”

Kerri suggests a Chai Tea (sp?) and says, “It’s cool there is nothing in it.”

I tell the Coffee Queen behind the counter, “I’ll have what she’s having.”

All three of us sat down on the patio and just talked. It was strange how someone you only know from reading their blog can feel so much like a friend you have known forever. I instantly felt comfortable to let my ninja guard down and let loose.

I may have been a little too “double O C” (More lingo for you Kerri. That would mean Out of Control!) at times but as Allison and Sara know, I can not always control myself. I am like a puppy dog when a new person comes over. Ya know what I mean? All excited and stupid. Yeah, I’m that guy.

Kerri is just as nice and funny and witty and cool as she seems. And can I just say that Chris is awesome too. I love it when two people that are so great find each other. They are quite the team. So perfect for one another.

We shared funny stories, serious situations, our past, our hope for the future and not always about diabetes which was nice. We discussed movies and music and how 34 really isn’t old. We had a lot in common.

I made a comment about how something made me feel “all honked up.” After she stopped laughing hysterically at my vocab I explained how that is my PG version of being “effed up” to which she gave a G rating. I will have to reconsider my rating standards it seems. When I get comfortable I say the strangest things. So embarrassing!

All and all I had a fantastic time. The only bad thing about the meet up is that time flew by. I probably could have sat there and chat chitted for hours longer. I just feel like we were old friend playing “catch up” and it felt really good.

The night proved to me that having people to connect with makes for a more tolerable “D” life. I felt so alone for so long.

Before Chris snapped this pic, I said, “What’s my inspiration?”

Kerri spoke through gritted teeth in a sort of Mr. Howell from Gillian’s Island voice and says, “We’re writers.”

And this is the stupid face I made. LOL

Here is a normal one.

Thanks again Kerri and Chris. I had a blast!

You Tube Tuesday #42

This week’s clip is a favorite around the Simmons house. We must have watched this thing a hundred times or so.

It’s a clip of Gwen Verdon (and her dynamic dance duo) performing a dance called “Mexican Breakfast” on the Ed Sullivan show. I am not sure who wrote the original music BUT someone decided to mash up this video with a new sound track. It is so great how even though the music was so different, it works pretty good and is very entertaining.

I hope you like it!

Enjoy!

Another Notch

This morning was very good for this Ninja. Why you ask?

Well, I had to tighten my belt to the next notch. That is such a good feeling.

More and more people say, "Hey are you losing weight?"

That is about the best thing to be asked next to, "Are you a model?" :)

I know each week I see less and less on the scale and that is great. But there is something fantastic about clothes feeling different on you. That is more tangible for me. And the very best is when other people notice.

It makes it easier to stick with it when you are seeing results.

I better have a good weigh in this Saturday since last week, I was on the second belt notch!
